Little Update!
Hey yall, long time no see!
First off, just wanted to say holy fucking shit. The sudden outpouring of love for Disparateum has been genuinely incredible, caught me completely off guard. In the internet age it's easy to think of creative work in a kind of binary sense, that if you put effort into something and let it out into the world and it doesn't wind up getting attention, then that's it. That's a big reason why I left twitter, incidentally. I hated the feeling of being beholden to the churn of Content, measuring work by whether or not it crosses X arbitrary attention threshold within Y days. I want to make art for the sake of making it, and not stress about whether it has an Audience. All that being said, though, seeing people interested in a project I hadn't thought too hard about in a while, let alone digging into it, really connecting with it and exploring everything it had to offer, it really lit a fire in me. So, thank you everyone. You being here means the world to me.
Anyway, brass tacks. Act II is still a bit away (I'll talk about that below), but I come to you bearing gifts. While dusting off my Disparateum files, I found a couple cool little side projects half-completed, so I've finished those up and added them to the Knick-Knacks and Trinkets folder. You now have access to a much-requested expanded list of example traits (sixteen in all, and I plan to continue adding them as time goes on); as well as Disp Libs, a trifold word game that might let you explore a tad beyond the Named City. As time goes on, I'm sure that folder will only continue to collect little flights of fancy.
As for Act II, I've been chipping away at it the last month or so. No promises for when it'll be done, this is still a hobby of mine first and foremost and I'm not gonna promise any deadlines I can't guarantee. I will, however, give you the rundown of where it's at currently. Act II consists of six new Layers, of which three are practically finished, two are about halfway, and one still needs a lot. There'll also be more Rituals, more mechanics sections, more jotted notes in margins, and a lot more playing with structure. After that, Act III will consist of four Layers, and will bring our little story to an end. I've known since before the first release exactly what Act III would entail, and that image has only sharpened with time. At some point, maybe with the release of Act II or maybe not, I also want to go back and touch up Act I to meet my current standards. Nothing major, just a lot of little tweaks and cleanups. I've learned a lot since I originally published Act I, and I wanna make sure the finished game reflects that properly.
